Sundstatjärn is a popular bathing lake in central Karlstad, that has been struggling with eutrophication for many years. Eutrophication gives rise to cyanobacteria during the warm months of the year. These blooms of cyanobacteria can in turn produce harmful toxins. To minimize the risks to humans and animals, Aquabiota on behalf of the Municipality of Karlstad conducts environmental monitoring of Sundstatjärn.
Surveillance will take place from June to October. Main focus will be on the plankton composition, but we will also follow the lake’s water chemistry and physical state. Environmental monitoring is part of Aquabiota’s commitment to an expanded limnic branch, where we hope to create a more modern environmental monitoring where traditional methodology is combined with a more detailed picture of the ecosystem through eDNA surveys.
