Marin modelling Stockholm Södermanland (MMSS)
Two reports from the project Marin modelling Stockholm Södermanland (MMSS) are now published.
Report summary
There is a great need for increased knowledge on the marine environment, both for regional and local coastal planning, and as a basis for supervision and decision making under the Environmental Code. Maps of the marine environment can be used for planning, protection and management, on both a national and an international scale.
Within this project, maps describing the spatial distribution of benthic flora and fauna, and coastal and pelagic fish, has been developed using spatial modeling. All the modeling results presented in the reports are of good quality. In addition to species and species groups, HELCOM Underwater biotopes (HUB) have been modeled. Based on the species distribution maps, preliminary marine conservation values have been identified. Maps of several environmental variables have also been produced.
Species predictions can be used as a basis for both integrated and sectorial planning of the coastal environment and the archipelago. Predictions are also useful in the assessment of how common or representative a species or habitat is at different scales. This is of great importance when evaluating networks of marine protected areas such as Natura 2000, the HELCOM Baltic Sea Protected Areas and OSPAR Marine Protected Areas, and the overhaul of national nature conservation interests. With the help of softwares like MARXAN, high resolution map data can be used for spatial planning.
