The decision support tool Marxan with Zones was used to support municipal comprehensive marine spatial planning.
Within the project, a variety of GIS-related data was be compiled and analyzed with the decision support tool Marxan with Zones, in order to identify where different human activities should be located to avoid conflicts and optimize nature conservation. The analysis included the entire marine area of the three municipalities; Kristianstad, Simrishamn and Bromölla; in the southern part of Sweden.
The results of the project are thought to be used by the Kristianstad Municipality as basis for their marine spatial planning and inter-municipal collaboration regarding the use of natural and cultural values as well as outdoor recreation and tourism. They can also provide guidance in coastal and marine construction and environmental assessments and be coordinated with regional and national marine planning.
The project was a part of the umbrella project “Bättre balans och mångfald i Helge å och Hanöbukten” and was carried out by AquaBiota in collaboration with the Kristianstad Municipality.
